Learning About LA By Learning About Her Jews...and Where They Fit In






Los Angeles has experienced massive change from the small town that ended at MacArthur Park to  the sprawling metropolis of today.  In the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries, Jews  played an important role in shaping the civic, cultural, and geographic contours of Los Angeles.  Jewish life, in turn, has been molded by Los Angeles.

Join Village member  Professor Bruce Phillips for a three-part tour of Jewish Los Angeles through time and space, including the future.

Part III: 2000 and Beyond (October 19)

In the first half of the 20th century LA was known as "the white city." Not anymore. We'll consider the place of Jews in an increasingly diverse county, including the emerging diversity of Los Angeles Jews. Bruce will present interesting findings from the 2019 Los Angeles Jewish Voter Poll conducted by the Pat Brown Institute of Cal State LA, most of which will not be released until December.

About Bruce Phillips:

Bruce Phillips is Professor of Sociology and Jewish Communal Service at Hebrew Union College. He is also a faculty member in Middle East Studies at USC and a University Fellow at the USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture. He was the 2017 recipient of the Marshall Sklare Award of the Association for the Social Scientific Study of Jewry. He and his wife, Toni Frederick, are second generation Angelenos and "Saba and Savta" to a fourth generation Angelina. He has been researching Los Angeles Jews since 1976.
