A Comprehensive View of Women's Battle To Vote

The fourth speaker of Discussion Without Dessert will be UCLA College of History Professor Emeritus, Dr. Ellen DuBois. She is one of the nation's leading historians of women's efforts to gain the right to vote. She received her BA from Wellesley College and Ph.D from Northwestern University. Dr. DuBois taught at the University of Buffalo and for the last three decades she has been at UCLA. She retired in 2017.

She became interested in the women's liberation movement while she was a graduate student and started working with the Chicago Women's Liberation Union.  Her interest in the movement led to her becoming "one of the early pioneers of women's history," her work focused on the importance of formal politics and women's history.

Dr. DuBois has written many books on woman suffrage, her most recent was published in February 2020, Suffrage: Women's Long Battle for the Vote. In 1998 she won the Joan Kelly Memorial Prize of the American Historical Association for her book about Harriot Stanton Blatch. Dr. DuBois has written about women's rights movements internationally, and is co-author of the leading textbook in U.S. women's history, Through Women's Eyes; An American History.

This DWD will be memorable and fascinating listening to this extraordinary teacher and author. She will be pleased to answer your questions at the conclusion of her remarks.
