Self-Reflection & Self-Kindness

“When I was young, I admired clever people.  Now that I’m old, I admire kind people.”  -- Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel.

Does Rabbi Heschel’s admiration include those who are not only kind to others but to themselves?  I think so.  Modern social science researchers tell us that self-kindness is an essential skill contributing to emotional well-being.  In our Jewish wisdom tradition the great sage Hillel mentions it in the first line of his famous saying: "If I am not for myself, who will be for me?  If I’m only for myself, what am I?  And if not now, when?" Self-kindness, how about now?

What better time of the year than now as we approach the High Holidays?  This is the time when we’re called to self-reflection and self-examination.  A time to evaluate our past year’s behavior with an eye to improving ourselves in the future.

I’m offering a 3-session class for ChaiVillageLA members about learning how to be kind to oneself.  These classes are based on a chapter I wrote in Getting Good at Getting Older, a book co-edited and written by Rabbi Laura Geller and her husband Richard Siegel(z”l).  My chapter is called “Taking Care of Your Emotional Self.”

The class will include discussion and experiential learning.  We’ll learn exercises on how to 1) tend and befriend ourselves; 2) how to discover our common humanity with others and 3) ways to embrace the present moment in the service of self-kindness

Here’s another quote by the great musician Eubie Blake: “If I knew I was going to live to be 100, I would have taken better care of myself.”

Join our class, it’s a great way to take Eubie’s and Rabbi Heschel’s advice.
