Magic Realism adds magic and supernatural events into the real world and treats them as if they are real.  Although the genesis of Magic Realism originated in Germany in the 1920's, it is best known as a movement in the 1960s when Latin American writers used it to explain how the indigenous people of their homelands coped with post-colonization that destroyed their culture, values, and language. Besides reading two Latin American short stories, there will be a brief slide presentation on one of the American visual artists who used magic realism. Lastly, we will open the discussion to include how people of the Jewish faith dealt and deal with discrimination and genocidal practices.
