The Disinformation News Machine

The First Amendment guarantees freedom of the press, a pillar of our democracy. The very idea of censorship offends our sensibilities.

So how then do we react when speech transmitted by cable news anchors during prime time harms the public good?

How do we grapple with misrepresentations about COVID 19 vaccines and the touting of unproven drugs that threaten public health?

What, if anything, can we do when on-air personalities speak of the Great Replacement,  the antisemitic and anti-immigrant trope that those born elsewhere are replacing white Americans?

How do we control our dismay when those same personalities promote conspiracy theories and feature guests who are election deniers?

Enter CLAIRE ATKIN and JULIE GREENBERG, two amazing women who are exercising their own First Amendment right to diminish the power of Fox where it counts: the bottom line.  They will speak to us about their organizations and ask for our help.

Our Speakers:

CLAIRE ATKIN is co-founder, with Nandini Jammi, of CheckMyAds.org, a watchdog group that monitors how the digital advertising industry fuels and funds racism and hate around the world. Their group has blocked ad revenue from Fox's website and its popular YouTube channel. Their campaign to "Defund the Insurrectionists" has successfully gotten ad exchanges to drop the websites of right-wing commentators Steve Bannon, Glenn Beck and Dan Bongino.

JULIE GREENBERG is founder of StopDisinformation.org, a clearinghouse of concrete actions to fight against Fox propaganda. Strategies include: how to unFox your cable box; how to ask someone to change the channel when encountering Fox News playing on public televisions in hotels, office lobbies and restaurants; how to call on Fox shareholders to pass resolutions demanding truth and ethics in news content.
