Film Discussion: Iconic Broadway Musicals



We will be discussing two iconic movies based on highly successful Broadway musicals. This will be a Zoom event.

West Side Story opened on Broadway in 1957. The show was conceived by Jerome Robbins with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Steven Sondheim. The movie version was released in 1961 and was directed by Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise. It featured Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn and Rita Moreno.

Grease opened on Broadway in 1972 and played until 1980.  By the time it closed, Grease's 3,388 performance run was the longest yet in Broadway history.  The movie of the same name was released in 1978 and starred John Tavolta, Olivia Newton-John and Stockard Channing.

You can rent both movies for a nominal fee on Amazon Prime. You may also find it on Kanopy or your local library.
