Ai Weiwei Exhibit: Skirball Cultural Center 12:30 Time Slot
We are excited to announce our first in-person event post-Covid!*
We will be visiting the Ai Weiwei: Trace exhibit at the Skirball Cultural Center.
*This trip is subject to Temple and Village rules.
The Ai Weiwei Trace exhibit presents a moving depiction of courage in the face of authoritarianism. Created in 2014, when the famed artist was under house arrest, it portrays activists, prisoners of conscience, and advocates of free speech around the world. To Ai Weiwei, the portraits pay tribute to "heroes of our time," many of then ordinary citizens who stood up against injustice in their communities. On view at the Skirball Cultural Center are 83 of the work's original 176 portraits, each one hand-assembled from thousands of Lego bricks.
About Ai Weiwei:
Ai Weiwei, born in 1957, is a Chinese contemporary artist and activist. He grew up in the far northwest of China, where he lived under harsh conditions due to his father's exile. As an activist, he has been openly critical of the Chinese government's stance on democracy and human rights.
Ai Weiwei has emerged as a vital instigator in Chinese cultural development, an architect of Chinese modernism, and one of the nation's most vocal political commentators. Ai Weiwei encapsulates political conviction and personal poetry in his many sculptures, photographs and public works. In doing this, he makes use of Chinese art forms to represent Chinese political and social issues.
After being allowed to leave China in 2015, he has lived in Berlin, Cambridge, UK, and most recently in Portugal.
