Jewish Influence on Modern Photography with Bill Aron

Jews have played an outsized role in the history of American photography, at least as important a role as blacks in the development of jazz. Although it is true that a number of Jews in Eastern Europe were active in photography during the period of its first growth in the 19th century, it was only in the 20th century and in America that the numbers involved in every facet of the art became large, and their talents very conspicuous.

We will highlight the aesthetic and substantive contributions of some of the more influential Jewish photographers of recent generations beginning with Roman Vishniac (of course), before moving on to more modern visualizations.

About Bill Aron

Village member Bill Aron's photographs have been exhibited widely, have appeared in a wide variety of publications, and are found in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, The International Center for Photography, The Jewish Museum, The Chicago Art Institute, The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Skirball Museum, The Israel Museum, and the Museum of the Diaspora. Three major publications, From The Corners Of The Earth with an introduction by Chaim Potok, Shalom Y’all, with an introduction by Alfred Uhry, and New Beginnings, with an introduction by Jane Brody, are in print, while one more, Holocaust Survivors: The Indestructible Spirit, is in preparation.
