How was a Sephardi Rabbi able to save his town – and possibly the whole region – from a cholera epidemic? And how did another Rabbi save the Bulgarian capital from arson? How did the famous Sarajevo Haggadah survive both Nazi occupation and the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s? Come hear Dr. Benatov speak about these and other notable moments from the rich history of Jewish life in Ottoman Salonica, Sarajevo, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria.

Dr. Joseph Benatov holds a doctorate in comparative literature from the University of Pennsylvania where he teaches Hebrew. A native of Bulgaria, Joseph leads tours every summer to the Sephardic Balkans. He will guide us through an amazing tour.
